New Zealand Centre Annual Lecture

SFG co-founders Sundeep Waslekar and Ilmas Futehally were invited to New Zealand by the New Zealand Centre for Global Studies (NZCGS) in November 2023. They interacted with scholars and activists pursuing a global outlook.

Dr Kennedy Graham, a former parliamentarian, and an international diplomat, is the founder of NZCGS. He has developed an innovative approach in cooperation with leading universities to spread global vision in New Zealand.

Sundeep Waslekar delivered the tenth annual NZCGS lecture at the University of Auckland, based on ‘A World without War’ his book published by HarperCollins India. He also delivered another talk at Canterbury University of Christ Church.

In his lectures he advocated:

-Phased elimination of nuclear weapons in a time bound manner

-Gradual decrease in military expenditure with saved funds used for global common goods such as health and climate action


-Prevention of misuse of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, cybertechnology and biotechnology for producing new weapons of mass destruction and killer robots    

 -The United Nations reforms reinforcing the principle of collective and cooperative security with a robust mechanism for conflict resolution between states.

Earlier lectures have been delivered by Swedish environmentalist Prof Johan Rockstrom, Australian statesman Gareth Evans, New Zealand former Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer, among others.
